Surgical Complications

Surgical complications. We’ve all had them, and we’ve all lost sleep over them. Dr. Wiley takes us back 25 years to Moscow when he was assisting #cataract surgery with a Simcoe irrigation device. The surgeon kept saying ‘more, more, more,’ and he thought he meant press harder. Turns out he just meant keep going. The result? A broken bag, a frustrated surgeon, and Dr. Wiley's very first anterior vitrectomy. Later, the surgeon sat him down and said: ‘That was your first broken bag. It won’t be your last. The important thing is knowing how to handle it.’ That lesson stuck. We don’t become surgeons because it’s easy, we become surgeons because we’re willing to learn, adapt, and keep showing up, even when it’s tough.
