Nanoscope- Company Spotlight
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded for optogenetics, the science of making cells respond to light. At AAO 2026 in New Orleans, we sat down with Sam Barone, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Nanoscope Therapeutics, to talk about what that science looks like in the retina. Nanoscope’s lead program, MCO-010, targets the intact cells of the inner retina to restore the potential for vision in patients with advanced retinal degenerations. In retinitis pigmentosa, the team has shown clinically meaningful vision improvements out to four years and counting. Their biologics license application is now under FDA review, with a marketing application under review in Japan, and a randomized trial in geographic atrophy is planned next. Company Highlight, American Academy of Ophthalmology 2026. MCO-010 is an investigational therapy and is not approved by the FDA or any other regulatory authority.
