Nutrition in Eye Care

Nutrition is a part of #eyecare that often gets overlooked, yet it comes up every day in #retina clinic. Dr. Mona Camacci shares how she counsels her patients with age-related macular degeneration on the role diet plays alongside AREDS supplementation. Lutein and zeaxanthin are at the center of that conversation. Dark leafy greens like spinach, kale, and broccoli supply the carotenoids that concentrate in the macula and help filter blue light. These nutrients support the retina’s ability to handle oxidative stress, which is especially important for #AMD patients. Omega-3 fatty acids matter as well. Patients who eat fatty fish or include sources like walnuts often see benefits beyond retinal health, including improvement in #dryeye symptoms because omega-3s help support the oily layer of the tear film. Vitamins A, C, and E also contribute to maintaining the health of retinal cells, and diet remains the primary way many patients obtain these antioxidants. Dr. Camacci’s message is straightforward: supplements have a role, but everyday dietary choices are just as important. Supporting retinal health often starts in the kitchen, and patients can make meaningful changes when they understand why these nutrients matter.
