Miebo and Xiidra- Dry Eye Overview with Dr. Nick Bruns
#DryEye is on the rise! 👁️Dr. Nick Bruns discusses the increasing prevalence of dry eye disease in the United States, with over 38 million people affected, largely due to lifestyle changes and increased digital demand. He explains that dry eye disease can be due to either a deficiency in tear production (aqueous deficiency) or increased evaporation of tears (evaporative), often involving both. The inflammatory nature of dry eye disease starts with disruption of the corneal epithelium, leading to a cascade of immune responses and inflammation. To manage this, Bruns highlights two treatment options: #Xiidra and #Miebo. Xiidra, targets inflammation by inhibiting T cell interactions and reducing inflammatory mediators, providing relief within two weeks. Miebo, addresses tear film quality by forming a thin monolayer on the tear surface to prevent evaporation, stabilizing the tear film for up to six hours.⏳ So how does Dr. Bruns determine which drop 💧to choose? He bases his treatment protocol by looking at clinical signs and symptoms. For patients with a tear breakup time of 2-3 seconds, he recommends Miebo. For those with scant tear film and central corneal staining, Xiidra might be more appropriate.
