Dr. Shanika Esparaz discussed Diabetic Macular Edema!🔬 Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a common challenge in patients with diabetes, affecting approximately 29% of type 1 diabetics and 25% of type 2 diabetics. As retina specialists, we encounter DME frequently, but when should you consider referring your patients for treatment? 🧠 Referral Criteria: Clinically significant macular edema (CSME), as defined by the ETDRS criteria, is crucial in deciding when to refer. OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) can be an invaluable tool in assessing this. The ETDRS defines clinically significant macular edema as : - retinal thickening within 500 μm of the macular center - hard exudates within 500 μm of the macular center with associated adjacent retinal thickening - or retinal thickening measuring 1 or more disc areas, a part of which lies within 1 disc diameter of the macular center 💡 Treatment Insights: Protocol T reveals that for patients with visual acuity worse than 20/50, aflibercept may offer superior visual outcomes compared to bevacizumab at the two-year mark.
