Case Study- Dr. Christopher Lopez

Interesting case shared by Dr. Chris Lopez. A patient referred for #cataract surgery with controlled type 2 diabetes underwent an otherwise routine procedure. At the one-month post-op visit, vision in the right eye was reduced compared to the fellow eye, prompting further evaluation. OCT revealed #pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (Irvine-Gass syndrome), a known inflammatory complication that can present weeks after surgery. Dr. Lopez reviews the underlying inflammatory mechanism, why many cases resolve spontaneously, and how to approach management, ranging from observation to topical NSAIDs and steroids, which may have a synergistic effect. In this case, topical therapy led to gradual resolution of the edema and improvement in visual acuity.
