Treating the Ocular Surface

When the #cornea isn’t ready, the cataract evaluation shouldn’t keep moving forward. In this clip from Episode 2 of Coffee with Nate, Dr. Nathan Radcliffe and Dr. Sumitra Khandelwal discuss why corneal topography has become an early checkpoint in the #cataract workup. For Dr. Khandelwal, Placido imaging can reveal subtle areas of irregularity that signal an unstable ocular surface. When those findings appear, her team stops the evaluation before moving on to biometry and other surgical measurements. Why? Because collecting a full set of measurements on an untreated ocular surface may mean having to repeat the entire process later. “I don’t want anyone using these numbers for anything. Ever. Never again.” The takeaway: sometimes the most important step in preparing a patient for cataract surgery is knowing when not to measure.
