GLP-1s are everywhere right now… but what do they actually mean for your eyes? Most patients with diabetes will benefit: better blood sugar control + weight loss = lower risk of diabetic retinopathy over time. That part is real. But here’s the nuance ⬇️ In the first few months, a small group of patients can actually see a temporary worsening of retinopathy. It’s not new (we saw it with insulin years ago), but it does mean these patients need to be watched more closely early on. Key takeaway: This isn’t a reason to avoid GLP-1s. Long-term, they’re protective. You just need the right follow-up strategy at the start. As for macular degeneration? Still too early to say.
