Geographic Atrophy Patient Education

One of the hardest parts of treating geographic atrophy isn’t always the injection itself, it’s the conversation around it. Patients hear “dry” macular degeneration and assume that means stable or less serious than wet AMD. Then they’re told they need ongoing treatment, despite not necessarily noticing a dramatic change in vision. That disconnect can make long-term adherence challenging. In this discussion, retina specialists talk through the importance of setting expectations, reinforcing the purpose of treatment over time, and helping patients better understand what’s happening to their vision. Imaging like FAF, fundus photography, and OCT can become powerful tools in helping make an otherwise abstract disease more tangible for patients.
