Dr. Bill Wiley shares his #ophthalmology wish list and this involves accommodating lenses!‼️Accommodating lenses are a type of intraocular lens (#IOL) designed to mimic the eye's natural ability to focus on objects at various distances. This is also known as accommodation, a process that involves the eye's crystalline lens changing its shape to focus light 💡 on the #retina for clear vision. As people age, they often develop #cataracts, and #presbyopia. In cataract surgery, the clouded lens is replaced with a standard IOL; however, these lenses usually provide good vision only at one fixed focus, typically for distance, and patients still need glasses for reading or intermediate tasks. Accommodating IOLs, on the other hand, are designed to move or change shape inside the eye, allowing patients to focus at multiple distances without the need for additional eyewear.👓 These lenses have the potential to offer a more natural range of vision 👀compared to traditional monofocal IOLs or even some multifocal IOLs, which can come with visual side effects like glare and halos. Although this concept is still being perfected they may become even more effective with time.
