Diagnosing Dry Eye

#DryEye can be complicated, but diagnosing it doesn’t have to be. Cory Lappin, OD, founder of the Dry Eye Center of Ohio, talks through the simplified diagnostic approach outlined in the TFOS DEWS III Diagnostic Methodology report. The idea is pretty straightforward: ask about symptoms, look for signs, and figure out what’s driving the disease. That may mean looking at tear film instability, staining, eyelid abnormalities, corneal issues, neural dysfunction, systemic factors, or a combination of several things. Having a more consistent way to approach these patients can help take some of the uncertainty out of the diagnosis and make it easier to identify what may actually be contributing to their symptoms.
