What happens when co-management works the way it's supposed to? According to Dr. Justin Schweitzer, it comes down to #communication. Patients should understand their options before they ever arrive at the surgical center. Surgeons should have the information they need to deliver the best care possible. And once the procedure is complete, the patient should transition back to their optometrist with a clear plan in place. Sounds simple, but when communication breaks down, the patient is often the one who feels it. As surgical volumes continue to increase, Dr. Schweitzer believes optometrists will play an even larger role in patient education, disease management, and postoperative care—allowing ophthalmologists to spend more time doing what only they can do: surgery.
