Amblyopia is reduced best-corrected vision in one or both eyes due to abnormal visual development during childhood, without a structural lesion that fully explains the loss. Types and causes
Refractive amblyopia results from significant uncorrected or unequal refractive error, so the brain favors the clearer image. Strabismic amblyopia arises when eye misalignment leads to suppression of one eye. Deprivation amblyopia, the least common but often most severe, is caused by an obstruction such as congenital cataract or ptosis blocking a clear image during development.
Detection and diagnosis
Vision screening in early childhood and comprehensive examination detect amblyopia and its causes. Cycloplegic refraction quantifies refractive error, and examination excludes structural causes of reduced vision. Because young children are often asymptomatic and cannot report unilateral blur, systematic screening is essential.
Treatment
Treatment first corrects any significant refractive error and removes deprivation, such as by treating a visually significant congenital cataract promptly. Refractive correction alone resolves or improves many cases. When residual amblyopia remains, patching or atropine penalization of the stronger eye encourages the brain to use the amblyopic eye.
