Geographic Atrophy Management: Case Review

In #geographicatrophy visual acuity doesn’t always tell the full story. Dr. Deepak Sambhara shares the case of an 82-year-old monocular patient with GA in her only seeing eye. Although she presented with 20/30 vision, multimodal imaging: OCT, near-infrared reflectance, and fundus autofluorescence — revealed a very different picture. With a fellow eye limited to hand motion vision from prior endophthalmitis, the stakes were high. Recognizing the risk for progression, the patient elected to begin complement inhibitor therapy with IZERVAY. One year in, her vision remains in the 20/25–20/30 range, and while #GA progression has occurred, it has not encroached on the foveal center. We cannot reverse damage. We cannot eliminate progression. But we can act early. We can monitor closely. And we can empower patients to take control of their disease. This is what proactive GA management looks like.
